Last week we produced two Thanksgiving tables back to back and along with our regular shopping at Crate and Barrel, West Elm and CB2   (we got amazing stemware and napkins at all three stores) we borrowed some items from local antiques dealers with amazing early American wares.    Colors, details and craftsmanship are always key to setting a beautiful scene and the pieces I gathered for the shoot hit these marks on all counts.

Clockwise from left:  Wooden treenware is a favorite of mine and these cutting boards are exceptional hand carved examples.  I recomend keeping such fine pieces cleaned and oiled to keep the wood from drying out.  The wooden saucers are great for salt cellars or candle perches.  This collection of pewter and metal pieces are perfect to dot a finely appointed table with flowers, nuts, table favors and more… I especially like the dotted boarder on the gravy boat.  These transfer plates in a light brown have a delicate and intricate pattern and were made for Abram French and Company in Boston in the early 1900’s (a fine china and crystal retailer) .  They are more special to me because of their geographical connection to New England.  Pretty shades of Autumn reflected in the soft colors of bake lite handled flatware… now these could inspire great paint colors.

Gather some of these great collectibles at open air markets this summer and decorate your own Thanksgiving table with some of this great style…  working on cool drink ideas today… will share some ideas for fruit coolers in the coming days.   Matthew

The new West Elm catalog came in the mail today. I’m going to curl up this evening and shop and dream. I’ve been collecting hammered aluminum pieces from the ’50’s. I love using them for display and entertaining. They produced some large trays back then that are just beautiful.

We do a women’s retreat every November with a small decorating budget, and I am always looking for great decorating ideas for fall. I normally do some really creative things myself, but I am excited about this site and seeing what else we can come up with using Matthew’s help. Thank you for sharing your talent!
