Everyday decorating ideas?

Keep sending me your ideas… this is so helpful.  I am pleased and suprised that there is so much interest in everyday decorating.  WHAT IS LACKING IN THE MAGAZINES ALREADY AVAILABLE THAT YOU THINK MATTHEW MEAD COULD ADD?  Provide me some great details and comments because the publisher will ask.  Matthew

    Hi Matthew,

I did a post a while back grumbling about how the magazines almost always feature homes that are “high-end”, and their contents are not really attainable to the everyday homeowner on a family friendly budget. Well, the response was overwhelmingly in agreement, and the reactions quite passionate in their frustration! Of course we want to see what is out there, to inspire us, but a balance would be nice, too.

I think a hallmark of your style is using objects that are readily available (new or old), and your magazine could blaze some trails by featuring real homes, who achieve the look for so much less. I always laugh at those features where they do the “high/Low” thing. I am usually yelling at the pages, “Hah, I could do it for even LESS!”

I also think we have become tired of so much of the same. If I see one more kitchen that has been modelled after the one in the movie, Something’s Gotta Give…Don’t get me wrong, I know it is gorgeous, but I am tiring of seeing endless kitchens with cream cupboards, apron sinks, stainless steel appliances, and soapstone, or marble countertops. Yes, they are beautiful, but we’ve seen enough of it, and different is beautiful, too! It is getting so that one can predict exactly what they are going to see, with a few exceptions, when they flip open a magazine. I think the magazines need to inspire us more with do-able spaces, rahter than make us just WANT, or feel badly about what we do have.

Well, now that I have that off my chest, I’ll let someone else bend your ear.I can’t wait to hear what others have to say. This is a wonderful dialogue, Matthew, and I hope it leads somewhere. If there was ever a person to rescue us from the predictable, it’s you!!

I was excited that Victoria arrived back on the scene. Whenever I arrive at my daughter’s in France, the first magazine I buy is Campagne Decoration. If you can find one, buy it. Or let me know and I will forward one to you. Yum.

Hi, Matthew. I have to agree with Linda. I think people want to see more homes, like theirs. More realistic type homes that the average person may have. My house, and the homes of a couple of my friends are on a tour every Christmas. They are your average home, no Mc Mansions here, but are decorated wonderfully (not to blow my own horn as we all get together and do the decorating). The people who come absolutely love this as they can see homes they can relate to. I think this is what people want to see. Each year we have more and more people coming. I think to have a magazine that showcases both the type of average homes we have, and also the homes we dream we had would be great!

I would love more ideas for children’s birthday parties. That could be something at any time of the year and you’re so halloween book was so incredibly creative and had so many ideas that kids would enjoy - I’m certain you would have some fabulous ideas for children’s birthday parties. There aren’t enough great ideas out there that haven’t been done before or tailor to the same old themes…

and yes, I believe that a Christmas 2009 issue is in high demand. Thank you for sharing all your wonderful ideas.

I love the decor magazines, but there is no way I could ever pull off those styles. We have a small home, small kitchen, no spacious windows, small bathrooms etc. Remodeling is not an option, nor is buying all new furniture etc to spruce it up. I need ideas of how to shake up the spaces we really live in everyday. Furniture arrangements, color combinations, tricks for organizing in a stylish way, low cost options for making a big impact in terms of how the home looks. All white rooms, shined silver, blood red accent walls, not helping with my real life dilema of how to blend the needs of a active family home with something that makes me feel good about how it looks too. What to do when you can’t afford the designer price rugs, wallpaper, fabrics, matching storage containers, valted ceilings, and certainly can’t stage your home with breakable objects perched on the shelves? What kind of makeover can you pull off if you don’t have access to the fancy stores, miles of antique stores, a carpenter at the ready, and a loan to pay for it all? I seriously wonder what those magazine homes look like in real life when they aren’t staged for the camera. I for one like my home to be lived in, not staged for the next guest to enter the door. That’s not to say it couldn’t use some serious help like a magazine from you is sure to offer. Help those of us with limited resources pull off a dream room too Matthew!
